Unity Arrangement of the
‘bits’ into a harmonious whole; i.e. all parts suggest the same thing - calm, cool, hot and wild.
Harmony Similarities in parts of the design elements listed above
Contrast The most dynamic factor; contrast could be shape, colour, line, or light and dark areas. Adds excitement
and interest to a painting.
Rhythm Groups of shapes, lines or brush marks which lead the eye into the painting. Should all work together!
Repetition More visual clues to help the eye move into or around
the picture.
Gradation Gradual changes in colour, light and dark or other quality; also helps lead eye through the picture.
(Alternatively, sharp breaks stop the eye)
Balance Good positioning of shapes and lines, colours and contrasts.
Dominance
Very important -
achieved by repetition, scale, light, colour or movement. Get this right and
your painting 'works'!.
