Landscapes will reflect the underlying geology of the area. There are three types of rock: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. They give very characteristic scenery and show different textures and styles of fracture. Artists commonly do not represent these well in their artwork. So, just as Constable made a study of clouds to make realistic skies, good landscape painters must have at least a brief understanding of the rocks beneath the land surface. This is the subject of the Landscape Workshop run regularly by Artists Afoot and is highlighted in the 'Artists in a Quarry' day.It is essential for all landscape painters. Many of the artists that have joined us for 'rocky' workshops, whether their style is realistic or abstract painting, or whether they are sculptors or other artists, all have found these workshops totally inspiring! Also, look out for the book which will be published soon by Artists Afoot 'Painting rocks and landscape'. |
