How to add impact through colour

Use colour to impart a feeling to your painting:

RED = action, danger, aggression, anger, passion, life
ORANGE = hot, lively, vitality, festivity, energy
YELLOW = cheerful, lively, spring, warm, friendly, sunny
GREEN = peaceful, tranquil, calm, safety, fruitfulness, natural
BLUE = cold, cool, distant, business-like, dispassionate
PURPLE = cool, distant, depressed, menacing, eerie, regal

How to compose your artwork

Use the 'rule of thirds' to make a balanced and pleasing composition. Do not select too big or complex a subject. If you are in a 'complex' environment then simplify your composition down to the essence of the subject. Make sure you:

MEASURE your subject (by scale and proportions)
Think about how you are going to suggest form (TONAL observations)
Observe where your LIGHT is coming from (or make this up)
Think about your COLOUR selection while you compose
PRACTICE a few ideas in a sketchbook before you start
DON'T WORRY about mistakes, just go over and incorporate them!

What to do when a painting goes terribly wrong:

One of Margaret's 'remedies' when a painting has gone so wrong that you hate it, is to be very bold and to cover the whole thing with the most vivid red you have in your palette. (Yes, I know - it is probably the one you have never touched because it is too crimson!). Once this wash is in place, but you can still see your original artwork beneath, then simply work over this new look painting with pastels to bring up the highlights again. You may find a pleasing result - it will certainly be an amazing experience!
